This year's theme, inspired by the Avenues World Element "Abstraction," challenges speakers to think creatively and interpret ideas in unique ways. Abstraction can be applied to topics like art, technology, science, communication, or personal experiences.
Abstraction is the conceptual process of deriving general rules and concepts from real-world phenomena, and then representing those rules and concepts using symbolic, diagrammatic, or visualization systems. Abstraction is a key element in early-childhood development (e.g., going from concrete to abstract), maths (e.g., algebraic symbolism), computer science (e.g., function definition), communication and artistic expression (e.g., linguistics and cubist art), and in the development of the executive functions known as cognitive flexibility and working memory.
